Project Case Studies

Acoustic Fan Face Distortion Measurement

Contract awarded as a Phase I SBIR
Sponsor: Propulsion Directorate
Air Force Research Laboratory

Goal:
Develop a technique for estimating inlet distortion produced by serpentine inlets.

Approach:
A method for estimating inlet distortion will be developed using the sound pressure levels from the noise created by the interation of the distorted flow with the rotating fan face. Phase I work will soon be completed, and a Phase II proposal has already been submitted.

Military & Commercial Applications:
The technology developed will be applicable to active flow control systems used to reduce fan face distortion caused by serpentine inlets. Specific military and commercial applications include next generation aircraft in development for mobility aircraft as well as any blended wing body (BWB) aircraft with embedded engines and boundary layer ingesting (BLI) inlets.
